Unified CPN (Maoist) lawmaker Narayan Kazi Shrestha and Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Nilambhar Acharya are set to contest for the post of Constitutional Committee (CC) Chairman. The election for the CC Chairman is scheduled for Friday. The two parties fielded their respective candidates after their repeated efforts to select a common candidate failed a day before the day of election. The Maoists have fielded Shrestha after they failed to reach agreement with other parties over the unanimous selection of their earlier proposed candidate Dr Baburam Bhattarai. Dr Bhattarai has proposed Shrestha's candidacy while fellow lawmaker Dev Gurung has supported the candidature. Likewise, NC lawmaker Suprabha Ghimire has proposed Acharya's candidacy while lawmaker Ratna Sherchan has supported the candidature. Counting on his experience in constitution drafting and his role as a mediator, NC candidate Acharya claimed that he would win the election for the coveted post. "We have got the responsibility to draft the new constitution by uniting all. This is not the first time that we are drafting constitution; we have got the prior experience regarding this" said Acharya. "I believe my experience will help the constitution drafting process" he added. On the other hand, Maoist lawmaker Shrestha said that he would triumph at the election as he is the candidate from the largest party in the Constituent Assembly. NC candidate Acharya is set to triumph at the elections if they receive support from their coalition partner CPN-UML. However, it is still not sure which party the coalition leaders will support at the election. In the 22-party meeting today, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal had hinted that his party could support the NC candidate. Meanwhile, PM Nepal is holding discussion with UML leaders regarding the candidate they should support at the elections tomorrow. Earlier today, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, CPN (United), CPN (Unified) and Nepal Janata Dahal pledged to support the Maoists during the meeting held at the Maoist parliamentary party office in Singhadurbar.
