At least nine persons were killed and 36 others injured when a passenger bus carrying around 60 persons met with an accident along the Siddhicharan Highway at Shisire VDC-6 in Udayapur district on Tuesday.

However, the exact number of persons killed has yet to be confirmed.

Police said the ill-fated bus ( Ba 1 Kha 7461) belonging to Ratna Ganga Travels  bound from Katari from Ghurmi bazaar skidded off the road and plunged some 300 meters down the road.

Among the deceased are four women, four men and a children, police said. The deceased are yet to be identified.

A police team headed from Area Police Office Katari and the locals are engaged in rescue operation. They are facing difficulties after due to the darkness after the night fell.

Nine of the injured, whose conditions were critical, have been taken to Dharan for treatment, while the others are being treated at a local health post owing to lack of transportation.

 

The incident site is 17 kilometer from Katari and 102 kilometers from Gaighat, the district headquarters.

It has been speculated the bus might have met with the accident after the driver lost control of the steering at a turning.    However, six passengers who were on the top of the bus saved their lives by jumping off.
